Access Statement

Poltarrow is set in 45 acres of countryside in the small hamlet of St.Mewan surrounded by Cornwall’s noted beauty spots with the Eden Project, Heligan Gardens and the coast just 15 minutes drive away.

The market town of St.Austell is located 1.2 miles away with bus and train station, banks, shopping centre and pharmacy. There are 2 out of town supermarkets (24 hours Tesco and Asda) 10 minute drive away with cash points. Penrice Casualty Hospital is 10-minute drive and the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske at Truro 30 minute drive.

The six original stone barns have been thoughtfully converted into cottages. Two of which, Red Deer and Sika, are suitable for those with mobility impairment as the interior is entirely level. The car park can be easily accessed along a paved walkway. Red Deer cottage is 18m from the car park and Sika 53m from the car park. Designed to attain M3 level under the National Accessible Standard, which means suitable for a person who depends on the use of a wheelchair and transfers unaided to and from a wheelchair in a seated position.

They are also great for families with very small children who wish to avoid stairs and steps.

Pre-Arrival

We are happy to discuss any individual requirements you may need during your stay.
Arrangements can be made to hire disability equipment and there is general information available about accessible places to visit in Cornwall.

Written directions to Poltarrow will be sent with confirmation of your booking.

Arrival

We will be here to meet you on your arrival from 3pm – 7pm and are happy to help with any unloading of luggage. Should you be outside of the time or on the rare occasion we are unavailable, we will give you prior notice and make ourselves known on our return.

Red Deer Cottage

Red Deer is detached, single storey, all on one level with a south facing terrace that runs along the front of the building. Access is through a single opening door into the kitchen / living room. There are also single doors opening onto the terrace from the living area and main bedroom. Door handles are of the lever style as are the sink/basin taps. There is quality laminate flooring in the kitchen/living room and hall. The bathroom is tiled and bedroom floor carpeted. The spacious bathroom is accessed from the hall with tiled floor, electric towel rail and basin with clear underspace. The shower has a horizontal grab rail and there is enough room in the cubicle for a shower seat to be placed (which we can provide). Looking at the toilet there is a horizontal grab rail on the right and a hinged rail on the left. The toilet is raised to transfer from the wheelchair to the seat. There is a grab rail fitted next to the bath on the right. In the main bedroom, the 5’ bed can be accessed from both sides with space for a wheelchair. There is also a 13 amp plug near the door so that batteries of motorised wheelchairs can be charged on the outside terrace. The kitchen has a lower height worktop of 36in (900mm) with easy access under the sink. Please note that the 2nd bedroom (twin) is quite small and does not have a turning circle.  There are extra suction rails that can be attached to tiled areas for extra support.

Sika Cottage

There is level entry from the single door into the kitchen/living room. The level south facing terrace runs along the front of the cottage. In the main bedroom, the 5’ bed can be accessed from both sides with turning space for a wheelchair and has an en-suite wet room. The spacious bathroom has a tiled floor, electric towel rail and basin with clear underspace and lever handles. There is also a grab rail fitted next to the basin. The shower area is fitted with a folding seat with a grab rail to the right and the shower has a lever. The shower is spacious and can allow a separate shower seat if preferred. Looking at the toilet there is a grab rail to the left and a hinged grab rail to the right. The toilet is raised to transfer from the wheelchair to the seat. The Kitchen/living area is tiled with lowered work tops 36in (900mm) and levered handles on the sink. There is a 13 amp plug by the entrance door to charge any electrical chairs on the terrace. There are also extra suction rails that can be attached to tiled areas for extra support.

Fallow

Parking for the Fallow Cottage is at the rear of the cottage. Access is on a slight inclined tiled ramp with handrail. The single entrance door has a granite step, which leads into the kitchen/living area. The wooden floor has rugs and the kitchen units are standard height. 

The TV and DVD have remote control. The carpeted stairs lead down to two en-suite bedrooms. The bedrooms are carpeted and bathrooms tiled. One bathroom has a shower with step up shower tray and the other a bath. There is a door with granite step leading to the terrace.

Roebuck

Parking for the Roebuck Cottage is at the rear of the cottage. Access is on a slight inclined tiled ramp with handrail. The single entrance door leads into the kitchen/living area. The wooden floor has rugs and the kitchen units are standard height. The TV and DVD have remote control.

The carpeted stairs lead down to three bedrooms and two bathrooms. All the bedrooms are carpeted with double-bedded room having an en-suite bathroom with step up shower tray and electric towel rail. The second bathroom has a standard bath and electric towel rail. The tiled hallway has a single door, which leads into the courtyard.

Stag

The car parking area is approx. 18m along a paved walkway. There is a step up to a covered area, with a step to the entrance door. The tiled hallway leads to the kitchen/living area. The kitchen is tiled with standard height kitchen units. A step down to the carpeted living area with remote control TV and DVD and entrance door leading to an enclosed gravelled courtyard. The first twin bedroom leads off the hallway and is carpeted. A step leads up to carpeted twin and double bedrooms. The double bedroom has a tiled en-suite bathroom with bath and electric towel rail. A single door leads into the gravelled courtyard. The second bathroom is tiled, has a walk in shower and electric towel rail.

This cottage is suitable for families with small children or less able guests who wish to avoid stairs and too many steps.

DeerPark

The car parking area is approximately 60m along a paved walkway. The entrance door leads straight into the tiled living/kitchen area with rugs.

The kitchen units are standard height and the TV DVD and radio has remote control. Glazed double doors step down onto a paved terrace.  The double bedded room is carpeted. The tiled bathroom has a spacious walk in shower – a shower seat can be provided. There is also a bath. This cottage is also suitable for less able guests.

Leisure Facilities

The Swimming pool entrance has a step but a ramp can be fitted to aid entry. Changing room and WC is on one level. Entry to pool is via steps with handrail. Anti-slip tiles fitted throughout. There is a step into the games room but a ramp can be fitted to aid entry.
The farm shop/tourist information room is down three granite steps to the entrance door.
